Asbestos Waste Must Be Disposed of Correctly - By Law
Asbestos waste is classified as hazardous waste under the Hazardous Waste Regulations 2005. Any asbestos-containing material (ACM) ready for disposal - including the packaging it was removed in - must be collected, transported, and disposed of by a licensed waste carrier, to a licensed waste facility.

What counts as asbestos waste?
Under HSE guidelines, asbestos waste includes:
- Any asbestos-containing material ready for disposal
- Packaging and double-wrapped bags used in removal
- Contaminated PPE (suits, gloves, respirator filters)
- Tools and equipment that cannot be decontaminated
- Asbestos-contaminated soil or rubble
- Household items containing asbestos (old blankets, hair dryers, mattresses with chrysotile)
Materials containing more than 0.1% asbestos are classified as hazardous waste in England and Wales.
